Root canal treatment is used to treat a tooth with an infected pulp. The pulp is made up of soft tissue consisting of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that extend from the base of the crown (the crown is the visible part of the tooth above the gum line) to the tip of each root. Root canal treatment is used to remove the damaged or dead pulp in the root canal of the tooth by cleaning out the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal. The site is then sterilised and sealed with a white filling to prevent further infection. It is an important procedure to help preserve a tooth that would otherwise require removal.
